How long to get a student visa?

A few questions about student visas:

1) How long does it take to get a student visa?  Do I have to have the visa before the course starts, or does it suffice to receive it before I hit the time limit?

2) How long does it take to get the permits to study in Montreal?  That is, how long does it take to get the Certificat d'acceptation au Québec?

3) Can I look for temporary or permanent work while on a student visa?  My intention would be to apply for a temporary work permit and landed immigrant status as soon as possible.

4) Can I look for work while just visiting (no visa), if I don't actually start work?

Student visa doesn't have an age restriction but you need to qualify for courses & have legitimate case that you are coming to canada for studying
