You will get a file number once sponsorship has been approved and the application has been received and entered into the system at the diplomatic post.

It typically takes about 1 month for your sponsorship to be approved. When they send you the letter approving you as the sponsor, there will be a file number associated with it. Then they will send your husband's PR application overseas and you can use the file number to check the status of the application.

No, there is no file number on the sponsorship approval letter. The file number is on the AOR, as the file is not created until the application is received by the diplomatic post.

The sponsorship approval letter has the sponsor's client number, however, which can also be used to check case status.

Yes, sorry, I meant the client # but mistakenly called it the file number which as you said is assigned by the visa office. Not all visa offices send out an AOR though.

AOR = acknowledgment of receipt  which is just a letter stating that your application has been received. Some visa offices send it, others do not.

No, your sponsorship approval letter just means that YOU have been approved as the sponsor, meaning that you have met the minimum requirements of a sponsor. It doesn't mean that they will provide him with a visa. Once sponsorship is approved, they send your application to the overseas visa office which will assess his application for permanent residence, conduct background checks and then if everything is fine, they will issue him the visa. How long that takes depends on what visa office you are using. If you tell us then we can tell you how long it should take.

Hi Nola.

Don't worry, you did the right thing. You were supposed to send your entire application to Canada (specifically to Mississauga). They process your sponsorship application. Once they approve you as the sponsor, they send the file to Damascus to process your husband's PR application. The average processing time in Damascus is 3-7 months so your application finalization should fall somewhere in that range.

As for the letter you received, well, it's hard to say without knowing more details. What does the letter say? The sponsorship approval letter typically says something like: "We received your application to sponsor a member of the family class on the behalf of XYZ. We are pleased to advise you that you have met the requirements for eligibility as a sponsor......."

You're welcome. I forgot to mention that there is a thread specifically for applicants applying through Damascus so if you have any other questions specific to how applications are processsed in Damascus, that would be a good place to ask: http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/timelines-for-damascus-office-t7666.0.html  Good luck with your application.
