How long does a TRV typically last? Or is it different for everyone?

Different for everyone.  It is not how long the TRV is valid for, that date is for when you must arrive in Canada.  The officer at the Port of Entry will determine how long you will be admitted for, usually 6 months, unless the TRV issuing office suggest shorter.  You can apply for multiple entry TRVs.
