I see that my application for PR under family class(outland processing) has reached mississagua,ON. How long will it take for them to assign a file number? will they send the file number through e-mail or postal mail?

You are not likely to get a file number from Mississauga.

You have a receipt number that you may be able to access e-CAS.
When you get a sponsor approval that will have the sponsors client ID.

A file number will be later in the process.

This is a good question as I don't know much and I am trying to get updates. But I don't have anything they requested. And I am unsure of what this receipt number is. Since I don't have one.

It is what you got when you paid for the application.

I don't have any kind of a number though. The 'receipt number' I have doesn't match anything and starts with an R, and when I use it, it says it should start with a B. So I am totally confused.

What are you trying to use it for, e-CAS?

The first tracking method to use is the number provided by your courier company.
Note that any people do not get access to e-CAS for a long time, others can use it within weeks.

You can use the receipt number to check the sponsorship updates - if e-CAS has the information active.
