How long can a U.S. citizen visit Canada, visiting via my U.S. passport? Is there a certain length of time after which I need a certain visitors visa? Thanks.

The border control can decide how long you may stay.  If they do not give you a certain time limit, you may stay in Canada for up to 6 months.  If you wish to extend your stay, you have to fill out a request for extension and send it to immigration 30 days before your visa expires.
