Hi I'm hoping someone could offer advice!

My current visa expires May 2012 and I only just sent off my my application in July. It arrived July 18.

I was hoping I would have implied status by then, however have only just been informed that that is after stage 1 approval. Accoring to their website that is 10-11 months once they start processing your application.

They are only currently working on applications received October 22, 2010, last Wednesday they were working on applications received Oct 18. So assuming they process off 4 days worth of applications per week, I have 15 1/2 months to wait till they start processing my application and then 10-11 more before stage 1 approval so October 2013 is when I can start working again?!?!

Is this right? Do I really have to go 2 years without a job and medical coverage even though I'm married to a Canadian? Is there anything I can do?

Please help!!

No, you are not calculating it correctly.

Your application arrived July 18, so 10-11 months from then means they will deal with it between May and June 2012.  At that time, you should hear something concerning AIP.
