Guys,
I really do not understand this - If the "Alberta program has received overwhelming number of applications", then how come the file numbers have only reached the 1100 mark yet. I mean 1000-1500 applications does not (in my eye) qualify as a huge response given the number of people who are currently here on h1b in the US.
Can someone shed some light on this please.

When they say "Huge Volume of Applications" that means as compared to thier resources. They don't have any automated system to assign file number. Each and every document needs to be read and then enter into system before assigning a file number. That's why they have 3000-3500 applications overall but those files are piled up there and haven't been entered into system.

To my knowledge there are two major cities with max opportunites Calgary and Edmonton. The are various suburbs too where one can choose to live.

The best people to answer those questions are people already living in Alberta.

The Majority on newly arrived immigrants like to live in suburbs of Edmonton while because of some high tech jobs, people move to Calgary. I you plan to work in Oil Industry then live in Fort McMurray That can  be a good place to live for Geologists, Petrolieum Engineers and Oil & gas Professionals. Edmonton is certainly the best destination for immigrants. University of Alberta, Edmonton Campus is really good and ranked top as well. Edmonton is province Capital so even if you plan to work in Government, there are lots of opportunities are available here. Crime rate is lower than  Calgary. Even Calgary is good but there are certain areas which has high crime rate.
But this not the topic of this thread so probably you want to start a new thread regarding city selection
