The phone number of FBI CJIS Division is 304-625-2000. If you tell them that you want to check the status of your background check request, they'll transfer you to the right department. But according to some posts in this forum, it may take some time till your information is entered into their system. In my case, I had sent my request by USPS on 12/2/09 and FBI received it on 12/7/09 (according to USPS tracking).

And I used the fingerprint card that I downloaded from FBI website.

Jasper,

Did FBI enter your information on their system?

Thanks

Yes. I did not give them USPS tracking info, but they found the receipt date of my request in their system. The receipt date in their system was the same as USPS tracking info (12/7/09). They needed my name to check my request status in their system.

Jasper,

Thanks for all the information.

Just to be ready for the application, I wanted some other information too -

For photos, what is the best way? Does Walgreens/CVS do this? Or we have to go to a regular photographer?

Thanks in advance.

Hi yojo,

My photos were taken at the fingerprinting agency where I took my fingerprint for PCC. I showed them the Photo Specification page of Baffalo Instructions (http://www.cic.gc.ca/EnGLish/pdf/kits/guides/E37048.pdf) and they cut the photos into the correct size. The whole process took 3 minutes and it was $15 for 4 photos.

You may be able to do it in Walgreens or CVS (or even with your own camera and photoprinter) and it's probably less expensive. If you do it in an office with immigration photo service, like my fingerprinting agency, it is fast and easy but it'll cost a little more.

Yojo,

You can also try Wal-Mart, I think it's little cheaper there as compared to other places.

Thanks

You'll need a new FBI certificate because the certificate must have been issued no more than three months before you submit your application. (http://www.cic.gc.ca/ENGLISH/information/security/police-cert/intro.asp)

And it's ok to open the envelope but you must send originals to Buffalo, not copies.

..i have a simple qn for which i still dont have an anwser in black and white
.. i plan to just do fbi fingerprinting and do state if requested per cic instructions
Now my qn is :
-FBI fingerprinting --one side of the story i heard is--> get the fingerprinting done at local police station showing valid id and send it to fbi with 18$ fees
-However i approached the local police station in central new jersey and they said they dont do it anymore and directed me to get the FORMS  from uscis AUTOMATED LINE for even canadain immigration fingerprinting

-Now does that mean I have TO JUST FINGERPRINT AND SEND IT DIRECTLY TO FBI...which would mean nobody is validating me based on my id?  AND  does it also mean i can just download the form and do the fingerprintiong and send it to fbi?..please advice

Every state has different ways to obtain state PCCs. The best way is to check their website or to contact them. Here's the contact list for state PCCs: http://www.canadainternational.gc.ca/Detroit/offices-bureaux/certificates-certificat.aspx?lang=eng&menu_id=332&menu=L (But you don't have to have state PCCs when you submit your application to Buffalo.)

Useful websites for FBI fingerprinting instruction:
"How to obtain a police certificate" by CIC: http://www.cic.gc.ca/ENGLISH/information/security/police-cert/north-america/united-states.asp
"FBI Identification Record Request" by FBI: http://www.fbi.gov/hq/cjisd/fprequest.htm

First, you have to print out the fingerprint card from FBI website and take it to a local police department or fingerprinting agency. Then a fingerprinting technician will take your fingerprints on the card you printed out from the website. And you have to mail the fingerprint card to FBI along with your cover letter (you can print this out from FBI website, too) and payment ($18).

I didn't write any specific date when I submitted my request (I used USPS Priority Mail envelope to send the request to FBI, so I couldn't write anything on the envelope anyway).

And when I called FBI, I told them that I needed the result as soon as possible, but they told me it would still take 10 weeks from the receipt date. So I guess I'll have to be patient for another 5 weeks...

thanks jasper!  10 weeks is a lot of time, i was thinking FBI would be faster and India PCC would delay me...but i got PCC from India in less than two weeks...rather just a week!

No problem, desikiVAAT. It looks like this FBI clearance delay is an issue even in other topics in this forum. Here's one thread in Skilled Worker topics: http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/fbi-clearance-in-us-t30136.0.html;msg179087#msg179087. According to some posts there, we can give our Fedex account info to FBI by email, and FBI will send the result to us by Fedex (we have to pay extra for Fedex service, of course). If I call FBI again (I hope I'll receive my result soon and I don't have to call them again), I'll ask about this option, but probably it won't make much difference in US applicants' cases.
