My husband who has been illegal in the USA left yesterday morning to go back to Peru. We are sending out his application this week.

After he left yesterday, I drove back to Canada with a bunch of his things. After the usual questions, which, I answered honestly, they asked me to pull over so they could verify the things I was carrying since they did not belong to me. They went thought pretty much everything and then one guy precisely seemed interested in finding an ID pieces that could have belong to him. I was carrying his expired passport and 2 credit/bank cards, which I voluntarily pointed to him.

After they finished the inspections, they asked me to park and to go to the immigration office. There I spoke with an other gentleman, who basically explained to me that  I was not allowed crossing a border with such documents if they did not belonged to me and that they would keep them, and that if my husband ever wanted them, he could one day go to the border and they would give them back to him only. I pretty much told him I had no idea that this could be an issue.

After a few minutes, he came back to see me and told me that they had decided finally not to keep the documents as they believed my story basically, and that after all he was my husband not just anybody.

Now, all in all it was a nerve racking experience as I was not sure what was going on, but they were very nice and professional, but I am still a little worried about how this could affect his application, and my capabilities of crossing the border with out any hassle.. are they going to flag me ??

Hello
Sorry for the nerve racking experience. It can happen to anyone, unfortunately. I don't think this will have anything to do with your application at all. Being illegal in USA, does not stop him applying to Canada as your husband, as long as he can meet the medical, background check and police clearance. So, again take it easy as this can happen to anyone crossing the border.
Best of luck

I don't see how that incident could be an issue. It will definitely not make you ineligible to sponsor your husband and they can't very well blame him for you breaking a rule that quite frankly seems pretty stupid.

I wouldn't worry if I was you...and I worry a lot... Lips sealed

I don't think this would affect your application to sponsor.

That being said, you generally want to avoid carrying around other people ID documents, especially when crossing borders... I guess you know that now. Smiley

as he is your husband there shouldn't be any problems for you in future, you will not be flagged.

It won't affect your application to sponsor.  Whether they have flagged you or not is up to them and you will know the next time you cross.

Thank you guys so much for this thread! We are having our stuff shipped together in a container but I am the one who's declaring the container at customs and we are worried about what might be in our boxes, paperwork, etc that they could hassle us over if they wanted... so now, thanks to you, we know to remove all old expired pieces of ID (we have a little box FULL of that!)

appreciate it so much!

Good luck with your sponsorship app,
