Anybody get health insurance for their visiting spouse while in Canada so the Immigration knows you won't try to use Canadian health care while you are visiting?

I am planning on getting travel insurance, which is fairly cheap and covers emergencies/catastrophes.

I used Blue Cross Blue Shield of Canada. Six months of "travel" insurance costs about $700. It doesn't cover pre-existing conditions, regular doctor visits, etc just emergencies due to accident or illness.

I just got a quote from INSUBUY, formally BuyAmericanInsurance, and for 3 months with 250 deductible and 100,000 was 116 USF

That seems cheap, I am hesitant from buying from them...They say that all their calls are being taken in the US not abroad. Makes me wonder...

Anyone else have any other insurance companies they used?

Hey Jim,

After my boyfriends work permit expired we purchased visitor coverage until April 30/2011.  We used
Co-operaters.  It covered Health/Hospital (pretty much everything) up to 50,000 no deductible and it cost $730.00 Smiley

We went to https://www.kanetix.ca/ and found one through TIC for 3 months $0 deductible and $10,000 for $165.  (he is coming up Sept 25 to wait for his PR approval)

We only did 3 months because you have to be in Canada the entire time, moment you leave it voids the coverage and for Xmas we are flying to Chicago to see his family.  So we will purchase the additional coverage we will need when we get back.

Good point thanks!! I was going to purchase it today, thank goodness you warned me about it voiding when you leave the country. I have to take my husband back to the US, and then try to come back. I will set it up for that day Smiley

I am assuming that the insurace is needed for the people who are "waiting it out" in Canada.  Once we get our PR visa we can utilize gvmnt healthcare.  Is that correct?

Just as a note: For anyone who is a spouse of a full time student in Ontario.
There is an OHIP equivalent called UHIP which you can purchase for your spouse or common law partner, which costs roughly $100 per month. It gives full access to health care, without fee, and gives you a card that you can present at designated healthcare providers, identified by your university.
I just found this out a few days ago and Im wishing I had signed up my spouse earlier instead of paying the same fee for emergency insurance, which doesnt cover basic health care costs.
Hope this is helpful to someone.
Best! Grin

So all of these are just for emergency situations, right? That's all I was able to find.. but if any of these cover regular doctor stuff, let me know Smiley
