To remain in Canada permanently, you would need to immigrate.  Here is a link describing the different categories for immigration:

Hi Gordy.  In case you are not yet familiar with the Canadian Immigration Website...here it is  http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/index.asp

I appreciate your comment on my posting.  Thanks!  I live in Olympia, Washington and just recently applied to immigrate to Canada under the Family Class.  (My wife is Canadian)  I don't know which plan would be best for you and your wife.  I do know that I will be coming back into the states 'occasionally'  for work.  I'm a painting contractor and have a good client in Idaho.  I can't imagine why there would be any restrictions on me as I will retain my 'treasured' U.S. citizenship.  I think that a good start might be to look into the "Skilled Worker" program.  Everyone is anxious to hire a good nurse.  That might be the key you need .

Let me know what you decide to do, Gordy.

Best wishes,
Rick
