Hello everyone, my husband is now officially a permanent resident of Canada. We applied from within Canada, here is our timeline:

Submitted application: Nov 24th 2008
Began Processing: Dec 24th 2008
Approval in Principle: June 9th 2009
Sent medicals: Aug 2009
Got our 'Decision Made' letter: Oct 7th 2009
Got our local immigration letter asking for passport and photos: Oct 20th
Landing appointment: Oct 23rd (today!)

We went to Local immigration center today and they had my husband sign a paper and said the PR card will be here in 4-8 weeks. It took about 10 mins altogether, the woman was extremely nice. I wish the best of luck to everyone else who is applying! If anyone has any questions, we'll be happy to answer. Thanks to those who have helped us out along the way! :)

I just recieved a letter from Immigration canada that says I met eligibilty requirements to apply for permanent residance status as a member of spouse or commonlaw partner, and that Quebec (im applying to be in Quebec) will contact me shortly concerning my permanent residance status. and that I can apply for a work permit? did you recieve this letter also? im not sure what to do now? wait for quebec to contact me or I need to apply to this open work permit? was your husband given a pr number right away or he needs to wait for the card to arrive before he would be able to work etc?? please any advice will be great. congratulations on your acceptance!

Hi trent, what you just got is called first stage approval. Your sponsorship is approved. So yes, you can now apply to work in Canada and they will continue to process your application for PR.

Hi, I submitted my application in April, 09 and got the AIP in Sept.  I know it is pretty fast but now it is stuck as CIC is updating my background check.  Do you know how long it will be processing? I enclosed with the checks with my application and I am not sure why they start to do the check after AIP is granted.

Since I'm busy with packing stuffs for our moving and believe I won't be available until Jan for unpacking stuffs.:( So, I rather staying for a while instead of applying working permit.

darumal, it shouldn't be too much longer as long as everything goes well.

asimkhan- my husband is from the u.s and he wasn't here on a visa as you are allowed to visit legally for 6 months if you are from the u.s. But you can apply for a visitors visa if you are from another country that needs to have one while in canada.
