Filling out 'em forms..

I'm just filling out the forms to sponsor my wife.
I'm a PR and we got married last month. She stays outside of Canada.

I have a few questions:
1. She has had her passport for a while. Do I fill the forms using her maiden name or, her new surname (my surname).
2. Do we have to send in the medical report at the time of sending in the forms? Or can she do the medical test a month
later and the Doc sends the report to CIC..

1. The name on the forms needs to match the name on her PP.  If she changes her PP to her married name, she can send in a copy of the new PP.

2. Medicals for spousal applications are submitted WITH the application, or else it will be sent back as incomplete.

Sounds like a conundrum: she wouldnt be issued a new passport simply because she got married.

Regarding the medicals, I thought the Doc would send the report directly to CIC? Can the Docs now hand you
the medical report for onward submission to CIC.

Oh, that's odd.  Well, I was issued a new passport because I decided to legally assume my husband's last name.  So, I submitted our marriage certificate and paid a fee to get a passport with my married name.  However, I had already begun using it, even without ID in that name. 

The DMP does not give you the actual medical report, he gives you a form to prove you went through the medical examination, that form is what is submitted with the application.  The actual report goes to the Regional Medical Office responsible for your country of application, and it will be sent to the visa office when requested.

Seeing that it takes forever to get the spousal visa approved, would there be any wisdom in
applying for a visito's visa in the interim, so my spouse can visit me while the application is on-going?

You can try, but you will need tonnes of evidence she will return to her home country and you should be prepared for her to be denied the TRV anyways.  Non-visa-exempt spouses are routinely denied TRVs, they are considered high risk for overstaying.
