Career Advice: CA vs. CGA vs. CMA

CA's are generally regarded as a cut above the other two accounting designations. The requirements are more stringent, and the skillset and depth of knowledge is quite different from the other two (especially CMA's). Outside of public practice, CA's are primarily found at the most senior levels of an organization, typically as controllers, tax specialists, heads of financial reporting, or at the CFO level. A CA designation also provides much greater earnings potential over the longer term, and has tremendous worldwide recognition.

That's not to say that there are no good CGA's or CMA's in the business world -- I know many who are exceptionally strong. But the CA program produces, on average, the strongest accounting professionals in Canada.

You definitely need a solid accounting underpinning before taking a job in a CA articling firm (focus on the big four - trust me), which would definitely mean some more time at the university studying up on audit, tax, and the like. At this time of year, most CA firms are holding information sessions at local universities - I might suggest that you attend and ask some questions about the job, the lifestyle, the compensation, and the opportunities.

It's probably worth mentioning that I am NOT a CA, but work in the financial profession. I primarily interact with senior executives, and I can confirm that the vast majority of Chief Financial Officers are CA's.

Depending on your ambitions, one of the other two designations might be best for you. All three invest a considerable amount in recruiting, so have a look at their respective websites for more info. From my perspective, I would hate to see someone invest time and money into an accounting designation if they had aspirations that could only be fulfilled through a CA designation.

bottomline is:  google the particular designation in the particular province where u plan to land. kasi iba2x ang prospects ng accountant per province, kanya2x din sila ng teritoryo

CA, CMA and CGA Professional Accounting Designations in Canada


There are three types of recognized professional accountants in Canada. These are accountants with a designation who belong to a self-regulating professional body. The three designations are:

    * Chartered accountant (CA)
    * Certified general accountant (CGA)
    * Certified management accountant (CMA)

Each is regulated by a different professional accounting body and requires a different combination of education and experience. No designation is better than another but each enables its members to perform different types of work and has its own rules of conduct.
Chartered Accountants (CAs) in Canada

The CA designation in Canada is regulated by the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA).Chartered Accountants require a combination or education, experience and evaluation. Education is a university degree with specific business course credits and the professional program for the province or territory. Work experience requires three years employment with a recognised CA Training Office and evaluation is through the three day Uniform Evaluation (UFE) which all candidates must pass to enter the profession.

Chartered Accountants in Canada work in four main areas of public practice, government industry and education. Around 40% of CAs work in public practice where they provide advice in areas like audits, business valuation, small business tax, personal financial planning and receivership. CAs are required in all levels of government and those in industry may be Treasurers or head of Finance or Controllers. Those in education teach future business leaders.

Certified General Accountants in Canada (CGAs)

The CGA designation is regulated by the Certified General Accountants Association of Canada, founded in 1908. Students in the CGA program need to obtain a bachelor's degree first and certification as a CGA requires a mix of education, examinations and practical experience. A newly certified CGA requires 130 competencies over the areas of professionalism, leadership and professional knowledge.

Certified General Accountants in Canada work in industry, commerce, finance, government, public practice, the not-for-profit sector, and any other area that requires accounting and financial management skills. Their expertise ranges across finance, taxation, business strategy, auditing, management and business leadership and their clients range from major companies and government to entrepreneurs.

Certified Management Accountants in Canada (CMAs)

The CMA designation is regulated by CMA Canada which has a partnership structure consisting of the CMA provincial, regional and national jurisdictions working together. The CMA accreditation process requires a sound academic business education, which is tested through a rigorous national Entrance Examination. The next step is the Strategic Leadership Program (SLP) which is a leading-edge professional development program, and relevant practical experience.

Certified Management Accountants in Canada often work as financial and strategic management professionals and can be found in a wide range of business functions, including sales and marketing, information technology, human resources, finance, and operations. They have a holistic view of business with a strong market focus.

wish lang talaga yan   kasi kailangan talaga nating mag upgrade doon   .  As of now ang advice sa akin is to accept clerical accounting-related jobs to get canadian experience.  Then isasabay ang pag uupgrade, then CGA muna...then to higher level CA  .

In due time, darating din tayo dyan.....basta ang importante makakarating tayo sa Canada for our kids' brighter & secured future

Agree ako sa iyo Mariks. Sana maraming available na clerical jobs para sa mga katulad natin na kaya i-support yung upgrade. Medyo mahal kasi ang cost ng upgrade.

baka mabawasan pa POF natin in preparation for migration, u know, shopping and more kasi mahal daw don magshopping sabi nila. kaya nagpa-panic shopping dto b4 punta don.

Hi everyone!  pasali na rin.  i'm a cpa here in pinas and nag ppr na ko early july.  im hoping to receive my visa this august but will be landing march next year na in toronto.

im hoping to get a job as soon as arrive kahit clerical or administrative muna and later on decide on what i will pursue (ca, cga or cma).
