Hi Everyone,
My fiance was denied entry to Canada yesterday after failing to prove that he would return to the US after his visit.  The first problem was that we didn't purchase a return flight.  He also didn't bring any financial statements with him proving he had funds to support himself, and also admitted he was between jobs.  We made just about every mistake you can make when trying to cross the border.  His IO called me, and I informed him that I was purchasing the return ticket, but that didn't help matters.  He was released from the Edmonton International Airport because there were no returning flights until this morning, so thankfully we got to spend some time together.  My question is this:  He was told as long as he can show he has some funds to support his next trip, and as long as he has a return ticket with him as he tries to pass customs, he can enter Canada.  But how much of this will be on record?  And what is the likleyhood that he will admitted when he tries to return?  Has anyone else ever been in a situation like this?  He didn't tell the IO that we have future plans (as in he didn't refer to me as being his fiance) but I think the IO saw through that...

When he does try to come back in a couple of weeks we will have a return ticket, and he will have cash on hand as well as a bank statement verifying funds.  I also plan to write a letter stating that he will be staying with me, and that I will be providing shelter and meals.  I just wonder how badly we screwed up and will he actually be allowed in if he has all of this proof. I'm sure more than a few of you are shaking your heads right now in wonder of how we could be so careless...I guess we were just in a hurry to see each other, and have him meet my kids.

Don't be too hard on yourselves. There are many people who assume Canadians and Americans can travel back and forth between the two countries with ease and aren't aware that you can be refused entry if the IOs suspect you may be more than just a visitor. And yes - what you've experienced has certainly happened to others. The outcome for your fiance was actually positive. There are a few Americans on this board who were actually banned from entering Canada for a year after attempting a crossing. The fact he was just turned away and told to bring more info next time is good.

I'm sure others will throw in their two cents, however the bad news is that none of us here can tell you what impact this will have on your fiance's next border crossing. It's possible they've flagged him in the system - or maybe they haven't. There's no way to find out except to try to cross again.

Make sure he brings as much stuff as he can this time showing ties to the US (return flight, funds, employment slips, rental agreement, property ownership, etc.).

Good luck!

He was flagged as he was allowed to withdraw.  Any enforcement actions are input.

Thanks for the correction. Interesting to know that all actions are input...

Does him being flagged mean he won't be allowed to cross in the future?  We plan on trying again, around the 20th of may, but he's really nervous about it, and so am I.  I just wonder what kind of scrutiny he will be facing, and what exactly being "flagged" entails.
