Hi all,

I am in the process of filling out the immigration forms to sponsor my wife to became PR. She came from Hong Kong to Canada in April 2011 as a visitor and was married in July 2011 (in Calgary). I applied for to extend her stay because we are working on the immigration together. Her extension was approved to April 2012. My question is can I apply for another extension for her (probably another 6 months)? What are the chances of it to get approve? We still need some time to work on the paper.

Thanks.

From what I've heard.. You can apply again (best if you do it atleast 1 month before everything expires)... but as long as you pay the $75 (I think that's how much it is).. then you can try for an extension... I can't say that 100%, but I've done research on that topic already, and that's what I've found out.

They aren't going to keep extending indefinitely on the promise that you will file a sponsorship application.  Remember, she is a foreign national and she is the one applying to extend her status.  Without an application on file from you requesting the ability to sponsor her for permanent status, they're going to - at some point - stop believing she actually has someone willing to sponsor her.  Get your PR paperwork done and in process.  You're married - no reason to procrastinate.  You seriously should be getting the PR application in process before she has to submit another extension request - and don't forget to include proof that the PR ap has been submitted.

Also - if you intend to apply to sponsor her via the inland process, get the inland PR ap in process before her status expires and include the extension request (you can request an open work permit) WITH the inland PR ap.  That gives her implied status to remain in Canada until they finalize her first stage assessment and issue the OWP (11-12 months).  If you don't include the extension with an inland ap, you're seriously complicating your application.  If you're applying for PR via the outland process, apply separately for the extension and include proof that the fees for PR were paid and that the application was received at CPC-Mississauga.

Hello,

When you say "implied status to remain in Canada", do you mean she can also work?  My common-law came to Canada on Working Holiday program for one year and her permit will expire mid May. Sad part is that we can only start process in mid may, becasue that is when it will be exact 1 year we cohabited. We probably can get married and start process earlier. Said that. If we start process earlier (at least 30 days before permit expiry), can she continue working during the PR process?
