Extending a work permit while waiting for PR
«

My friend is applying for a Perminent residency for a skilled worker. She sent in her application in March and has not heard anything from ICI yet.
Is that normal?
She is currently working in Alberta (on a work permit that expires in March 2012) and was told she had to get some number from immigration to be able to extend her work permit and keep her SIN number. Does anyone know where or when she will get this number?
Thank you.

Does anyone know this?
I'm applying for a PR throug spousal sponsorship and know a bit about how all that works, but I don't know much about the whole work permit thing. But my friend is getting pretty anxious about loosing her work and all rights in Canada while she waits for her permanent residency.

Almost 8 months and NO REPLY from CIC is abnormal. Does she have a tracking number for her Package that she sent to CIC? Ask her to track it. Secondly, has her fees been charged? Ask her to check with bank. She is supposed to receive an email from CIC by now...ask her to check her Junk mail
Is that normal?

For your friend to extend her Work Permit, the following has to be done:
1. Her employer should apply for another LMO through HRSDC for her. actually, her employer should have initiated the process already. This requires advertisement for the post and proofs that no PRs or Canadians are available for the job.
2. Once she gets the positive LMO, then she will have to apply for Work permit outside Canada (at Seattle Office)
3. She will have to keep her status legal while her PR application is in progress.
4. If she does not get a positive LMO then she cannot work for that employer or any other employer.
5. Before the expiry of her Work permit if the positive LMO does not come through then she has to apply for EXTENSION OF STAY as a Visitor (Can be applied within Canada at Vegreville, Alberta) or if possible apply for Student permit and avail student permit (apply outside Canada)
6, When her application of Extension is in progress, she will retain a legal stay in Canada under "IMPLIED STATUS"

Thank you.

Thanks for your replay Mitali.
Her fees have been charged so she knows their received her application, but that all she knows. She has been cheeking her junk mail and there hasnīt been anything there either. She has been trying to get a hold of someone to ask about the status of her application but hasīt been able to get any answers. She has both tried phone and email.
Iīll let her know what you said about extending the work permit. She is only working part time and I think that might be making things more complicated too.
