My common law partner is awaiting the approval of his permanent resident application (as a skilled worker, filed last july).  In the meantime, he is working here with a work permit.  However, this work permit is due to expire as of september 09 and it is not certain that the residency will be in place at this time.

we are concerned that he might face difficulties renewing his work permit because of the current economic situation and because the company he works for is having financial trouble (employees are being put on 'worksharing' program).

what next steps should be taken?

Your options may be:
1. Look for a new job and other prospective employers who are willing to apply for an LMO
2. Extend your TRV status

If you have LMO and a letter from your employer indicating that your company wants to extend your stay then WP extension should not be a problem.
