Expired student Visa!

Hello...I have a question.. a friend of my is in Canada as International student , his visa expired and hi sent to renew it already , he has a flyticket to USA, but he haven"t got the papers yet... what is his current status in Canada if his papers are in hold? can he come to visit me any ways? he has came to USA and  goback  to Canda in the past few months with any problem, but now is afried to leave Canada and not be able to reenter again.... We are in a panic situation!!!  :-X he cant not miss that fly!!!
                            Pleasee!! if some body have been in this situation before!! or if you know what we could do about it we will apreciate your help!!! THANKS!!  :D
   
               (additional information: he is flying from burlington, so he crossing the border by bus)

There can be two ways of this situation

1) He can apply for visit visa from USA to Canada and reenter back there
2)he can find a work in Canada so his employer can hold him
3) if he had applied for papers off course takes time hence he might need to go back to his own country for certain period of time
