When you return, you will (like everyone) have to prove that you will leave the country and satisfy all the other requirements as a visitor to Canada (enough money etc).
I guess the issue is that a POE who sees your history may not let you back in, as you now have a visitor record it is very likely that you will have a second conversation.
How many visa extensions have you had so far, how long have you been in Canada and what did you tell them when you requested your visa extension?

Sometime the border agent takes a lot into consideration before making a final decision in this case. Like your country of nationality. Most often, US citizens and British are almost always allowed in regardless of how glaring they are using the ploy of exiting and rentering ploy to stay back in canada

I have witnessed this on countless occassion. Another point is that unlike the US, canada allows dual intent so your ongoing PR may or may not count against you. Sometimes too, it all depends on the agent that interviewed you at the POE

Sorry to hear the bad news.
Can I ask, what were you doing in Canada, just visiting ?

Are you applying for spousal PR?
You say "on visitors visa for some time with on going extensions", how long have you been here?
