I think that Indian Laws do not allow dual citizenship. You may be able to get a PIO (Persons of Indian Origin) Card meant for NRIs.

Indian laws amended since 2yrs or more permitting dual citizenship. Only requirement is that the other country example canada also hv to allow dual citizenship. This is any way the case with canada.

You should consult Indian laws.   Canada does allow dual-citizenship.

Rules changed. No dual citizenship with Indian Citizenship. Surrender Indian to retain other citizenship status.

Despite all the news coverage and excitement over this issue, please understand clearly that the Constitution of India does NOT allow dual citizenship, i.e., holding Indian citizenship and citizenship of a foreign country simultaneously.

Government of India decided to grant Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) which most people mistakenly refer as 'dual citizenship'. Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) of certain category who migrated from India and acquired citizenship of a foreign country other than Pakistan and Bangladesh, are eligible for grant of OCI as long as their home countries allow dual citizenship in some form or the other under their local laws.

Thanks rocky272727. The link was useful as it cleared my doubts on dual citizenship. What documentation will they require along with application for oci?

Hi Babutv and rocky,

Overseas citizenship of India is nothing but a life long visa to India for people of Indian origin who has taken up citizenship of other countries ( excluding Pakistan and Bangladesh). It will avoid queing up for visa every time before they come to India. It also gives you opportunity to work or invest/run business in India, with all the legal protection. But i think there some restrictions, like not entitled to vote, contest elections, or purchase agricultural land etc. It is obviously not full citizenship or dual citizenship. Thanks
