I have read this on the CIC website and I also asked the officer at the border about driving to the US and coming back without a PR card. The website and the officer both confirmed that if I am in a private vehicle I can come back to Canada with the COPR, but need a PR card if I am using a commercial transportation.

Has anybody done this recently??

Returning to Canada in a private vehicle, with your Passport and COPR is not a problem.

Yes, I have done this in the past, before my PR card arrived.

Are you talking about landing at a canadian border, means you take your car to the border and then come back?Did I misunderstand?

Can one use a COPR (conformation of permanent residence) to proof ones status in Canada in order to apply for a US visa? I am still waiting for my card but have my appointment at the us consulate for the us visitor visa in 2 days.

Please advice

Thanks

NO what I meant is, if I need to go to the US after I got my PR and since I dont have a PR card yet will the Border officer allow me back to Canada.

By the way, I just wnt to Buffaloe this weekend and came back, no issues. You can come back to Canada without a PR card, if you are driving back in a private car.

I think you should be fine. As the COPR is issued by the government and the Canadian Government does accept it as a proof of PR. Does the documents required for the US visa specifically say that you need to show your PR card??

Wanabecanadian,

Before getting my PR Card, I went abroad three times and came back in private car after landing in the USA. I drove from NY to Canada (via Buffalo) and all I gave was my COPR and passport.
I had a couple question such as have you applied for a PR and when? When did you leave Canada.... Any alcohol or Tobbaco?  Basic questions... No hassle at all...

Then, after getting the PR Card, I have used commercial transportation as well... It depends what your budget allows you to and time availability...

Just don't worry.. As long as the CBO see your landing visa on your passport and your Original COPR, no problem...

Good luck,

SFD
