Domestic violence and PR status

Hi guys,

i have a urgent question for all of you who are in canada..

My sister-in-law got married to a guy in canada in 2009 and is living at his home in Toronto from last 1 year. They treadted her well for first 6-7 months but from what i heard today .. the guy has started beating her up (mainly due to his frustrations ).. she is very young around 23 and doesn't work so was keeping everything to herself .. until yesterday when she called me all crying ..

My first question is  - How can i report to the domestic violence dept of Toronto ..  if any such situation arises .. i am in US.

second question - She has her PR from last one year .. is she by anyways dependent on her husband?

third  - We have recently got our PR and are still waiting for our cards which are addressed to her house .. so can we somehow change our PR card address

please let me know soon .. we are desperately waiting for our PR cards so that we can go to Canada and help her out in someway

She doesn't have to stay at his place. In fact, he signed a contract with the government of Canada that whatever happens, he is responsible for her for 3 years. That means, and she should, leave him and try to get a place for her, and if she can't work, ask for the government's help (wealth fare). The government will help her out. He will have no choice to pay the governement back.

Also, if she decides to go that route, she should fill a complain at the nearest police station. It could get worse, she needs to get out this place as soon as possible. Her security is in danger.

Someone with more knowledge of this matter will probably give you more details in this thread...

That is interesting .. i will make her aware of that contract thing .. its a good point to scare the hell out of that dumb ass guy ...

You, or she, can just call the police. Explain that she is being beaten by her husband, and police officers will be sent over. If she is in the middle of being attacked, or hiding somewhere in fear of an attack, she can call 911.

She is not dependent on her husband. She has her PR already, so can stay in Canada even if she leaves her husband. If she has no money, she can apply for welfare. (Her husband will have to pay this money back to the government up until she has been a PR for three years.)

They should arrive soon. If she is in danger she should not stay just to get the cards. You can change the address you want them sent to. Also, you should be able to travel to Canada even without the cards. Maybe ask at the nearest Canadian embassy about how to do this.
