documents for marriage in CR

OK, according to this website http://www.costarica.com/trip-planning/travelers-info/getting-married-in-costa-rica/  it says i need A passport
valid for at least six months , A certified and authenticated copy of your birth certificate , A certified and authenticated copy of your police record,  An Affidavit of Single Status (don't got it yet).

So, I am the canadian citizen and want to get married with my costarican fiance this june. my question is what does it mean to get an authenticated copy of my birth certificate and police record? I already got my police record done, and I'm waiting for my certified copy of my birth certificate to come in. and these documents have to be submitted the day I get married right? PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME, I really want to get this cleared up. Hope I can get some answers, I know it is not completely related to family sponsorship, but before the spouse sponsorship I have to get married!!!

Contact the Costa Rican embassy in Canada and find out exactly what they want and what 'certified and authenticated' means to them. Get their answer in writing and take it with you as well.

hi canadianwoman, I am salvadorean, and in Costa Rica is almost the same thing, I got a married with a canadien, so we needed these papers:the birth certificate of her, a letter of the civil registry, to say that she was not married, and she was able to get marry with the seal of the embassy of El Salvador in Canada, in your case would be Costa Rica, and here in El Salvador I got a translator and we put all the papers in spanish, and with a notary we authenticated everything. She didn't need the policy record, but if they ask for it, so get it, and then is the same thing.

Thanks for this information arcuva, I contacted the embassy of Costa Rica and they told me that I have to get my birth certificate and police record authenticated by the government and by the embassy of Costa Rica. So I saw in your post that you got a notary to authenticate everything? How fast did they get this done? and the notary was from El Salvador or form canada? thanks!

Hi Gary, I am a Canadian living in Costa Rica and am married to a Costa Rican. The lawyer that did our marriage only needed a photo copy of a letter from my lawyer stating that I was in fact single (for bigamy purposes) and my birth certificate and copy of passport...neither translated nor certified...So I guess it really all depends on what `type` of lawyer you get down here, and they ALL issue the same things.

But are you planning on applying for YOUR Costa Rican Residency, because if so, it is better for you to get ALL the documents you need in one shot from the embassy in Ottawa, Ontario and make mass photo copies for all the places that need em. Lawyer for marriage, immigration etc...

   Yes to get married in another country they do require these you get them notorized by an approved person of the embassy they will tell you who to use,and if you want it quicker fed ex these papers to you spouse to be so she can get them translated down there by an approved translator and have them ready before you arriev there.
   She can get the marriage certificate there with these papers you send and it will be ready for when you get there.Im not sure if it is or not but make sure your marriage in costa rica is recgonised by Canada as Canada does not recgonize some countries......like i said im not sure but there must be someone here who can tell you this.

You really dont need to go through all that hassle JUST to get married, on the other hand if you are killing two birds with one stone          ( Marriage + Immigration) It's better to get ALL your paper work done it ONE shot.  Although BECARFUL that your documents do not expire by the time you have everything together to go to Immigration in Costa Rica.

Please email me for further questions as I have just RECENTLY received my Residency in Costa Rica and having gone through the process MYSELF without LAWYERS I'm pretty knowledgeable on this specific topic and country.
