dilemma -- go to US during visit visa extention period - trouble ??

i'm visa waiver passport holder , current visit visa would be expired next month, want to do an extention till april . however would visit US before end of Jan while i think the extention application is still under processing , if so , how i could return back to Canada , will i be considered as overstay ???
