Hi Guys,

I have been in difficult situation to interpret the
eligibility of OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Program).

I completed my landing procedures last year in April and came back to my country after spending
two weeks in Toronto.
I applied PR card, SSC and open the bank account and came back. That means I
did not comply criteria (2, 3, and 4). Now, my wife is pregnant and expecting a
baby in June and we want to move back to Canada in March, 2012 permanently and having delievery there.
In this case, when will we be eligibile to apply OHIP? Should we stay there for 3
months or 183 days before being eligible for applying OHIP?

Your suggestion/comment will be highly appreciated. Many thanks.

Once you return to Canada, you will have to wait for three months during which time you will have no OHIP coverage. Once you have lived in Canada for three months, you will qualify for OHIP.

Hi Scylla,

Thank you for your input.
By the way, are there any provinces where we can get health insurance as quickly as possible i.e. without living for 3 montsh?

Hi there,
I read the eligibility criteria again. Doesn't it mean that a new immigrant (who entered Canada for the first time) can get OHIP in 3 months but the immigrant like me who entered Canada last year and left, need to stay there for 183 days to be eligible for OHIP?

More clarification/thoughts/real experience will be appreicated.

You need to be in Canada for three months to qualify. It doesn't matter if you are a new immigrant - or a Canadian who left the country for several years and has now returned.

The 183 days is what you need to do to keep your OHIP after you have it.
