departing Canada during an outland application

Hi, everyone. Our outland PR application went in this week. We've just learned that my wife's 93-year-old grandmother has had a serious stroke and lost considerable function and is not recovering. Should we lose her, my wife would be like to attend the funeral.

I've read some threads on this site (e.g. http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/-t44798.0.html) that suggest that leaving Canada with an outland application in process may not jeapordize our PR application. I'll be calling the CIC help desk on Monday to ask, but I'd also like the advice of this forum: is there a hard and fast rule against departing with an outland application in process? Or is it something that's perhaps frowned upon but there's leeway? Or is it a non-issue altogether?

Thanks for the swift response. Since Canada doesn't require a visa for Japanese citizens, I'd expect that she'd be able to come and go but when it comes to officialdom I don't want to leave anything to luck/chance. For instance when I was dealing with customs to bring our personal possessions into the country, the agent refused as proof that I'd been living in Japan for the past twelve months:
+ my japanese driver's license
+ a notarized translation of that document
+ the spousal visas in my passport dating back to 2007
+ the family registration document showing the dates of our marriage, the 2008 birth of our son, etc

I'm left with the impression that the whole thing is left to the decision of the agent in question, which makes me doubtful.

That's the way it is... Visa or not visa, you're in the officers hand.
They can refuse entry  and she will have to go back and wait in Japan.

The good news, is that your application will continue normal process.

The biggest issue with inland other than be separated from your spouse,
your application is void, and you have to start a new one...
this time outland, no other option.

For an outland application, traveling will not be an issue. So, no worries.

I have an update. My wife went back to Japan to visit with family. Last night she re-entered without problem. They looked into her account and saw that she had applied for her PR visa and everything was fine.

Some notes on our case:
+ She's Japanese, so she needs no visitor visa to visit Canada
+ We'd technically been in violation of the terms of her first visit to Canada because he had a six month window and she left the country a week after that had expired (silly error on our part)
+ She had our (Canadian citizen) son with her and a copy of our PR application

*Spanks uccemebug* Extension! LOL.  I don't think you will need another one, her leaving re-set the clock, so you have another 6 months and by then I am fairly sure she will be through with PR processing.  However...*tsks* bad uccemebug, bad! We taught you better than that, young man!

What can I say, the grandmother looked like she might stabilize. We had decided against leaving the country altogether. Then the grandmother's case deteriorated badly and my wife felt she had to go. My wife reports that her presence was a big hit with everyone.

Well, I am glad her Gran is doing better.  I'm sure they were very happy to see her and hear all about her settling into her new home!
