delays in passport stamping

I submitted my wifes passport to the high commission in India on 27th Dec! Its been close to 3 weeks now, does it make sense to contact them & requets for an update? My wifes been outside the country only once for 2 months like 7 years ago, i doubt if thats holding up the background checks!

Also how long shld one wait in such a situation?
