Out of curiosity- what happens if the sponsor dies?
For instance, one is required to sponsor a minor for ten years- what happens if the sponsor dies before that ten years and there was no co-sponsor?

I would assume that in that case, if the child went on welfare, there would be nobody for the government to collect the money back from.

I mean could they stay in Canada? If there were other family members there? Would they have to start all over?

Of course they can stay in Canada. If they are already PR, nobody will kick them out. The only problem is if this is a PR child with no parents anymore and nobody to take care of them. I do not know if Canadian authorities would try to find relatives in the childs home country or if they would put it in foster care.
