Paul,

The general rule is that any foreign individual who wishes to work in Canada on a temporary basis must obtain an Employment Authorization prior to commencing work. An Employment Authorization is a document issued by the Canadian Immigration authorities, it is usually tied to a specific job and employer, and it is almost always limited in duration. In most cases, you must have a firm job offer from a Canadian employer before applying for an Employment Authorization.

There do exist programs between the UK and Canada under which UK students (and, in certain cases, non-students) may holiday in Canada for an extended period of time and receive permission to work as incidental to the holiday. These programs do NOT require a job offer from a Canadian employer. One such program is called the "Working Holiday Program;" another program is called the "Student Work Abroad Program" (SWAP). If you qualify, you will be free to work at most any job(s) you wish in Canada. There are a limited number of applicants accepted under these programs annually, and to apply you must contact a Canadian Consulate/Embassy in your country.

Best of luck,

Seth Dalfen
