I am one of those unfortunate fiances who can no longer apply for permanent residency in Canada. I am a US citizen, moving to join my Canadian citizen fiance this spring, and have been trying to apply for jobs in order to get a work permit. We will be cohabiting for the first time, so I cannot apply for permanent residency as a common-law partner until a year from now.I am a young social services professional with a BA, 4 years of work experience, and am qualified for many jobs that I've found advertised. However, upon talking to organizations, I've found that it would be very difficult for them to get HRDC approval to hire a foreign worker in my field. I don't have enough points to apply as a skilled worker either, since in order to get enough points I'd have to have an HRDC-approved job offer! Talk about a Catch-22...
Once I arrive in Canada, I would like to appeal my case with the government, to see if I can get an open work permit as a compassionate case, until I'm able to apply for permanent residency. I don't know if this is possible or how to go about it, since I'm not allowed to even apply for permanent residency until a year from now. Can you tell me where to start?
