"time frame"

My common-law partner from New Zealand is here with me in Canada and we are applying for a permanant residencey. He wants to work however, and we are wondering about how long it takes to get permission to work.....Does he need to wait until he has his permanant resident status, or does he need to apply also for a Work Permit. He doesn't currently have a job offer.
Thank you

An open employment authorization can be obtained after an approval in principle in the context of an inland sponsorship application. Unfortunately, present increases in backlogs for those cases has extended the delay to such AIP to 12 months after submission of the case.

If he is otherwise eligible for employment authorization, that can be sought prior to AIP.
