"Family Class or Independent Status"

Hi everyone. What a great site this is...I find it quite interesting. My problem is this: A year ago, I met a Canadian and have been visiting here from the States since last May. Our plans are to eventually marry, however, his financial status isn't the greatest. (He isn't bankrupt) Would I be better off to apply for Independent Status, or go with the Family Act, and have him sponser me as a fiancee, and risk being rejected because of his financial status? Also, is there anyway to continue to live here while my application is being processed?

A Canadian citizen/resident may sponsor his spouse from within Canada, if the spouse is in Canada at the time the application is submitted. The spouse will be allowed to stay in Canada during that process and can apply for an employment authorization at the time the application for permanent residence is submitted. The spouse does not require an employment offer to apply for this employment authorization. When sponsoring a spouse, financial requirements do not need to be met.
