"career change to computers - best choice"
Hello Harry,
I have cleared my Immigration interview and received my medical papers. hopefully I should land in Toronto in about 7 months time. The question is that I would like to take up a career in computers without much of programming. I would like to know what skills I should acquire during this intervening 7 months so that I can get a decent job preferably one that I can work independently from home.

I have worked as Engineer Officer on board merchant ships for the last 19 years. I have a Degree in Bachelor of Science and a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering both issued in India. I have been using computers at home and also on the job for the last 6 years.

I would sincerely appreciate all your help.

Thanks,
Damu

Hi Damu,

Thanks for the inquiry. I can tell you what is in demand in Canada in terms of hi-tech jobs but I am reluctant to tell you what you should study specifically. Your career should always reflect things that you are interested in doing and also something that you would enjoy devoting a large amount of time and effort into. So what I suggest is that you research the type of career you would like. If you like to work alone without a lot of communication, then maybe straight-forward programming would be an option. If you like to interact with people then maybe a support or consulting role would suit you better.

There are a lot of skills that are in high demand in Canada. Here are just a few: e-commerce developers and architects (Java, Visual Age, CORBA, etc), ERP Consultants ( JD Edwards, SAP, Peoplesoft), Oracle developers and DBA's, Network Specialists ( LAN ,WAN, Novell, etc).

What I see in the market at the present time and for the years to come is an increase in new technologies revolving around the Internet and also development in wireless connectivity.

It is difficult for me to orient you without knowing too much of your exposure to Information Technology but I do hope that this has been a help. Toronto is a good location to be for access to I.T jobs and I wish you well in your future endeavours.

Harry

Hello Harry

For me as civil engineer, as far as I know, there is no big demand in that career, even I have 9 years experience with master degree.

I have decided to change to computer field and to start from year 1 of computer science. Is it righ decision?

Regards,

Zalok

Zalok, I do believe that there is much more opportunity in Computer Science, especially in the e-commerce area. Technology is progressing so rapidly in this area that there will always be in a need for this type of profile for quite some time. I believe you made a good choice and best of luck. Harry
