"Career in Law"
Dear Harry,

I am now in the process of applying for a permanent resident visa as a professional/skilled worker.

I am a lawyer in the Philippines for the past three years, specializing in corporate law. Assuming I am successful in my application, what do you think are my prospects in pursuing my chosen career? Can I practice law in Canada or in any one of its provinces considering that I am not a Canadian citizen and that I did not obtain my law degree from a Canadian law school? If your answer to my last question is in the negative, what requirements should I meet to enable practice law. Last, is there a demand for foreign lawyers in Canada?

Please advise.

Regards,

donski

Donski, Practicing law in Canada is a complex thing because you are not just dealing with Canadian law but the laws also vary from province to province within Canada. I suugest that you take a look in the Canadian Bar Association Website and do some research on the type of background you need and the steps to follow in order to be a member of the Canadian bar: www.cba.org. There is a link that allows you to contact the bar association directly for any inquiries. Harry
