Edfer,

It's difficult for me to give you an honest answer without knowing what your background is. Could you repost and let me know what you do professionally.

As far as people who can assist you, there are plenty of non-profit organizations (governmental and private) that can help new residents get established. Let me know where you want to relocate and I might be able to direct you further.

In regards to being rusty with interviews, I could very well run you through a practice interview if you were here but I think this would be difficult. Probably the best advice I have is to run yourself through interview questions with the help of some very good internet sites. Monster.com and CareerBuilder.com are a couple of good ones. Just make sure that you know yourself well and know what you are good at and what your strengths are. Confidence in yourself speaks volumes.

Best of Luck,

Harry

Edfer,

There are many non-profit organizations that can assist those that relocate to Canada (both governmental and private). It is just a question of finding them in the location you wish to settle in. I think what I need from you is to get a better idea where in Canada you want to relocate and what is your professional background. You see, some skill sets will be more in demand than others. Employers will always hire domestically before they hire from abroad if the skill sets are available.

Give me more information about yourself and I will be able to direct you in greater detail.

Thanks

Harry

Anwar, I have to be honest with you, there isn't a huge demand for Finance/Accounting professionals from abroad. First of all, there are accounting and taxation principles that are different for Canada than anywhere else. Plus, I see many accounting graduates still searching for work here so I would have to say that it might be more difficult for this skill set than for others such as I.T. You are free to verify and see possibilities on your own. Try taking a look at CanadianCareers.com or Jobbus.com for some job listings in your field. Harry

5. "RE: Seeking a Job"
Harry,

I have the same dilema as anwar. Want to settle down in Canada to have a better quality life for us and children. After spending so much money on lawyers, application fee, airfares, one wants to lead a quality within say six months. Dont want to roam around in canada with a begging bowl after the resettlement funds are exhausted.

There is nobody to guide on what is exactly out there. The answer is always the same, try "xxx infosite " or "yyy. jobsite. The PROBLEM is that it is not possible to get job offers unless one lands in Canada.

As you have this great thing going, can you not tell us what really to expect, so in case there is no scope of job or better life, one decided not to emigrate.

I would request you to tell me (based on past statisstics or whatever)

1)How much time after landing would you expect a person to get small jobs, the $10 kind which not need any canadian education? This is to keep the house fires burning till get a better job

2) Hearsay is that the only jobs available are 2 to 3 hour jobs. One has to do a couple of such jobs. Is that true.

3) I'm chemical engineer 20 years experience in consulting companies. Can i get a job based on my Indian degree and experience ? Or do i have to study for a year or so before someone hires me ?

4) Is passing a CCPE exam a prerequisite to get a job as engineer ?

Request a frank answer please.

Regards

sunil

Sunil,

I will make my response as frank as possible. Logic tells us that Canadian employers will only hire abroad when no one is available to do the job domestically. At the moment this case holds true for Hi Technology jobs with the majority of them revolving around Information Technology. Can I tell you how long it takes to get a job? I can't answer that question honestly without knowing what kind of individual you are, what kind of technical background you have, and moreover what your character is. On average, I can say that most people do land a position within six months. Can I guarantee this for you? No.

The reason we tell you to go to www.whatever.com is because the most effective way to access positions across Canada is through the internet. This is also where the majority of people find out about positions. I have hired people from abroad that applied through the net and many other corporations do so also.

In regards to you education, relevant experience can sometimes replace the education prerequisites unless there are special accreditations required.

Whether you are prepared to take the risk in the end depends on you. All I can say is what I tell everybody, "There is no guarantee in anything, you will always be the deciding factor of how successful you are in life. There is no such thing as a permanent job. You are only as permanent as your ability to demonstrate to your employer that you are irreplaceable."

Harry

7. "RE: Seeking a Job"
Harry,

I have similar "Fears" from going to Canada without a job. Right now I am working in the Arabian Gulf in the IT field. I have BS and MS degrees in Information Technology from the USA and have 6+ years of experience with companies such as Andersen Consulting and Conoco. I wanted to know if you think that I will spend a long time looking for a job in Ontario. I am getting doing my landing in one week and worried to death of ending up jobless and losing my current job. A word of advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Gus
