Whether you travel by air or land does not affect how long you may stay in the US. Under the current Canadian regulations, which will probably change on June 28, 2002, a Canadian permanent resident may not be outside of Canada for more than 183 days out of any 12 month period without risking their permanent resident status. To stay outside of Canada for longer than 183 days requires a Returning Resident Permit.
