"Bringing in home contents from the us"
 
   Hi, I am engaged to an american and we intend to marry soon in Canada and apply for a family visa. What do we need to bring her home contents into Canada from the USA? Do we need to be married first before we can bring her contents into the country and can we do it whilst an application for a visa is pending? Is there a tax charge for bringing in the goods into Canada from the US? Thanking you in advance.

   When a visitor arrives at the port of entry with all belongings in tow, it can create the impression that the individual does not have the intent to remain in Canada temporarily. This can seriously bias the decision to admit a visitor. Admissibility as a visitor is always based on discretion, however, and as such it is impossible to say in advance what the consequence may be.

It is not otherwise necessary that you be married prior to her eligibility to take her belongings to Canada. It may be advisable to contact Customs Canada to determine the financial implications of doing so prior to immigrating.
