"commuting between US and Canada every week"

I received my landing papers and I am planning on landing by April next year. Due to the bad economy I am hesitant to quit my job in Chicago and migrate to Canada at this time. I wanted to keep working and commute between Windsor, Ontario and Chicago. My company is willing to let me work four days a week and I will be in Windsor three days (four nights)a week. My question is, if this will cause any problems with maintaing Canadian immigrant status. My second question has to do with the border crossing at Detroit. Is it taking longer now to cross the border because of the tragedy in NY on Sept. 11. Because if it takes too long each time I have to cross then I may have to decide to get a job in Toronto and move there permanently.

Your advice as always is greatly appreciated. Your web site was very instrumental in helping me get the Canadian immigration.

An absence of 4 out of 7 days per week would inevitably mean that you would be absent for greater than 183 Days our of any given 12 month period. This means that, at some point, you may be obliged to demonstrate that you did not have the intention to abandon Canada as the place of your permanent residence in order to retain your status.

Evidence of a home in Canada and remittance of applicable taxes to Revenue Canada may suffice to demonstrate the necessary intent.
