"Want to go home"

   Hello:

I am a Canadian married to an American, with a twist. My husband was actually born in Montreal and moved to the US at the age of 12. He became natualized at the age of 17 and joined the Air Force. In three years time we would like to retire to PEI. I have a little property there and we want to build our retirement home on it. I maintained my Canadian status, but what do we have to do for my husband?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Christine

The first thing that you should do is determine if your spouse, in fact, has citizenship in Canada already. If he does, and had not lost it over the years, then no proceedings will be necessary in order to allow for his readmission at this time. Your location Canadian consulate may be able to assist you with this.

If he had not obtained such status, or subsequently lost it, then a sponsorship application can be submitted at this time to allow him to obtain permanent resident status. As a citizen, you may submit that while you remain in the USA, or you may conduct the application inland if he is admitted to Canada as a visitor (he may seek such admission at a port of entry without a passport visa).
