"Typical situation!"

   Dear All,

I am Xinping Chen from China and presently working in Germany. My Chinese boy-friend is also working and living with me in Germany. I filed my Canadian immigration as an independent immigrant in Oct. 1999. A few months before my interview was arranged (My interview took place on the 12th Oct,2000), I wanted to include my boyfriend as a dependent in my file as we were to marry at that time. I requested the Embassy in Berlin by writing a letter. They said that I can include his name and also asked my boyfriend to attend the interview together with me. (Until that time, there was no separate application filed on my boyfriend's behalf!). The interviewing officer however was not very happy about it but then took our interviews. She even orally told us that our case has been upheld and we need to get married and produce the marriage certificate so that she can put our files together. The application processing fee and the right of landing fee were also paid on that day on my boyfriend's behalf.

However, due to some personal reasons, we don't want to get married at all. This fact, I wrote to the embassy immediately. Later, after about two months, I received the medical forms only for myself. I completed my medical exams in December, 2000. It is almost 3 months since then and I haven't received my Landing papers yet. My frequent e-mails to the embassy didn't attract any attention. Recently when I finally got them by phone, they said that my medical reports have come and my background check is now being carried out! I thought the interview and then the subsequent medical exam is performed only after all the formalities like background check is done.

Anyway, how long does that take to complete the processing of my application?.

And, I also requested my boyfriend's name be removed from my file so that his form can be separately considered as a primary applicant on his own with a specific file number etc., So far, this has not been done. Does the presence of my boyfriend's name in my file hinders the processing of my application in any way?. As I remember, if there is a problem with any of the dependent also can delay the primary applicant's file. How do I go about with my application as I am not sure what is happening in my case.

Could anyone guide me through please?.

Thanking You all in advance,

sincerely,
Jing Chen.

It appears that your boyfriend has been removed from the application, and that the case has otherwised been approved, subject to medical and security clearance. It is not likely, therefore, that the background clearance of your boyfriend should delay your case. Whether or not the visa office has opened a separate file for him is not apparent.

The background clearance is not necessarily started before an interview and medical examinations. In some cases, background clearance is requested only once the officials are satisfied as to the qualifications of the candidate.

It is not possible to predict the duration of the background clearance, as each case has different requirements. In most cases, the process is concluded within 6 months. There are exceptions, however, in which the process can take as much as 12 months or longer.

   Dear Mr. Cohen,

Thank you very much for your response.
Yes, my boy friend's name has in fact been removed
and he is also given a separate file number.
He has even received his medical forms. That makes
my case independent of my own and I just hope to
see my background clearance through and pray for
a speedy process of it.

Thank you very much once again.

sincerely,
Chen.
