As citizens of the UK, you are eligible to appear at a Canadian port of entry without previously applying for a visitor visa. Once in Canada, you may need to apply for an extension from within Canada to be eligible to stay for 8 consecutive months. If, however, you exit Canada to Alaska, re-admission as a visitor would mean that your stay in Canada would restart from day one. As such, if the Alaska trip occurs prior to the expiration of your allowed stay in Canada, and you then seek readmission afterwards, no extension would have to be sought.
