"Living abroad in Winter"
Hi David, or anyone!

I'm just migrating to Canada as a Permanent Resident, and my wife dreads the long cold winters in Canada, She wants to live in Nigeria durning the cold winters months; from Novenber thru March of every year. She will be working in Canada as a Registered contracted Nurse for the other seven months. we'll be buying a home in Canada when we arrive, will there be a problem doing this kind of move? I myself will be permanent in Canada except durning the Christmas holiday when I'll go visit my family and relatives for couple of months. I can afford this time because I work as an Independent Computer consultant. Will this jeopardize my permanent Resident status since I have a home in Canada and also me or my wife not staying over the 183 days period? thanks.

In the cases of each yourself and your spouse, your status in Canada would remain intact as long as it could not be demonstrated that you had the intention to abandon Canada as the place of your permanent residence. If either individual spends greater than 183 Days outside of Canada in any given 12 month period, it may become your responsibility to demonstrate that you did not have the intention to abandon Canada.

Given the durations that you have stated, it would not otherwise be problematic. Such absences, however, will affect eligibility for citizenship.
