"Want to Immigrate, but don't really fit the Classes....?"
I am a 46 year old widow with a 5 year old child. We are both U.S. citizens. I would like to move to the Yukon, to live with my boyfriend. My widow's Pensions are such that I do not need to work. I can prove that I would present no financial burden to the Government. I have an Aircraft Mechanics license, so could apply for Skilled Worker but as I stated I have no need to take a job from a Canadian. I don't really wish to remarry as it would interfere with my Pension. I could start a small business in the community where I want to settle and therefore use the Immigrant Entreprenuer or Self-Employed Immigrant Class. But I had really hoped to just do Volunteer work in the community, as there is great need for that. So I need advice as to how I should apply. By the way, in the 1970's I was married to a Canadian and lived in the remote north, so I am familiar with the hardships. At that time I had Landed Immigrant status, but lost that when we divorced and I moved back to the U.S. Any advice you could provide would be appreciated. Thank-you.

Business Class applications are not necessarily appropriate in cases in which the applicant does not have prior business experience. The Skilled Worker program is not appropriate for those who do not have the intention to seek employment in a specific occupation in Canada.

The Family Class, however, does include provisions for common law spouses, which may be applicable in your case. In such cases, applicants are considered in the skilled worker (or another independent) program. If the applicant does not meet the requirements of such, then Humanitarian and Compassionate grounds are considered.

In the latter case, documentation or other corroboration of the relationship is critical. Such an application would be most appropriate once you have been residing together for some time.

In the interim, you may seek temporary admission to Canada.
