The following information is from Human Resources Development Canada:

Your work prospects are rated GOOD because:

Employment grew at an above-average rate because of business requirements for the services of lawyers/notaries.

Hourly wages ($29.75) are above average ($16.91), and the rate of wage growth is also above average.

The unemployment rate (1.3%) is significantly below average (5%).

The number of job openings exceeds the number of job seekers, and most new entrants are recent graduates.

Work Prospects

How the ratings are determined.

Outlook To 2007

Your work prospects will continue to be rated GOOD because:

The employment growth rate will likely be below average because the high cost of legal services may lead people to use alternative dispute resolution processes that do not necessarily involve lawyers. As well, use of computerized legal databases may lead to greater demand for paralegal technicians at the expense of lawyers.

Although the retirement rate will likely be average, the number of retiring workers should contribute to job openings.

However, the number of job openings will likely exceed the number of job seekers.

Preparing for the Competition

You'll be competing with recent graduates.

If you're in Quebec, you'll find increased competition between lawyers and notaries since the reform of the provincial legal code.

You'll need to build interpersonal skills and knowledge about the community where you practise.
