"Currently unemployed?"

   Hi,
First of all I would like to thank your for this website. I applied for Canadian immigration on Aug 2001. The process of my application started on Nov 2001.
On Aug 2002, I received the initial assessment stating that no interview is required and was asked to do medical. They also asked for FBI clearance, and Landing Fee. After receiving these documents they asked for my recent photo.
On Oct 2002, I received a letter stating that an interview is required at this point and they will inform me about the date later.

In the application wrote the following:
1. Full time employed with 2 years of Experience (On the time of application I had 2 years of experience as systems Analyst.
2. Going to school to complete my 4 years degree in Computer Science. (I had completed 14 years of education)

After the application I worked until Dec 2002. I lost my job due to layoff. Then I started to concentrate only on my studies. Currently I am going to school as a full time student to complete my degree as soon as possible.

As I am a full time student and not employed at this moment, will it be taken negatively in the interview?

By any chance will I fall in the new point system?

Thanks,
Ahsan.

The fact that you have lost your job is not necessarily a negative factor in your case. As you will be able to show that you are using this time constructively, it should not create any negative impression on the officer.

If your interview occurs after March 31 2003, then you will be evaluated under the new criteria with a pass mark of 70.

   Mr. Cohen,
Thank you very much for your reply. I have called the CIC Call Centre in Montréal: (514) 496-1010 and Toronto: (416) 973-4444 few days back to ask about the new point system. From that centre they informed me that all the applications those were in process before June 28, 2002 will be evaluated in old point system. I also asked them if the process in delayed until 2003, would it be evaluated by new criteria. They informed me it wouldn’t. As you have informed me that if my interview occurs after March 31, 2003, then I would be evaluated under the new criteria, then the CIC Call Centre is providing wrong information to people?

Thanks,
Ahsan.

It would appear that, in this instance, the clerk at CIC may have provided you with the wrong information.
