In most cases, the Canadian processing centers will conduct security background checks after the interview, or after an interview waiver has been granted.The time taken to conduct security background checks can vary, ranging from 4-6 months for some individuals, to upwards of 18 months for some. Although it should be noted that "18 months" is not relatively common, and appears to be a maximum.
