Canada has a universal free medicare system, in which all Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents have a right to the access of free medical care. This right to free medicare is often seen as a basic cornerstone in Canadian rights, and it is highly regarded by Canadian citizens. This medicare system covers all necessary medical procedures, ranging from regular visits to doctors, to long duration hospital stays and surgeries, and even physiotherapy.(Unfortunately, in most cases, the Canadian Medicare system does not cover dental expenses.)
Some provinces even extend medicare coverage to temporary visitors, but not all provinces do so.
On average, in most provinces, it takes aproximately 3 months to receive a Medicare Card, once one has applied for the Medicare Card.
Indeed, many newcomers landing in Canada, often choose the province of Ontario, as their initial destination. Further information regarding the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) can be obtained at the website of the Ontario Ministry of Health.
