Admissibility as a visitor is determined on the basis of the discretion of an immigration official. It is not possible to predict, in advance, if any given individual will be admitted, or if an extension to the Visitor Visa will be granted once the person has already entered Canada as a visitor. As a general rule, Visitor Visas (for tourist and visitation purposes) are often valid for a period of 6 months, but there are many exceptions, and some such visas can be granted for shorter or longer periods.
