"Visitor's Visa"
Hello David

Thank-you very much for maintaining this excellent source of info. I visited my now girfriend in Russia this summer. She'd like to visit me now in Canada. I understand obtaining a Visitor's visa is entirely at the discretion of the officer in Moscow, but i can find no information on the liklihood of success. Are there no stats on the approximate percentage of approvals for such applications? I had thought it was just a waste of $75. The process for applying seems straightforward except for the invitation letter i can send. Any hints on how to word it. I understand the officer's greatest fear is that she will apply to stay once here. She has a good job and a mother to return to. Would it help if she was invited by a female friend instead of myself? Is some other proof of temporary intentions helpful? She doesn't want to buy a plane ticket before approval of the visa! I welcome the comments of anyone who's applied for a visitor visa as to how hard it is.

Again, thanks so much for your help.

Steve

1. "RE: Visitor's Visa"
Given that a visitor visa is based on the discretion of an immigration official, there is no means of estimating success. If the immigration official is satisfied as to the temporary nature of the applicant's intended visit, then the application is approved. If the officer feels that there is sufficient risk of immigration (i.e., remaining in Canada permanently), then the application would be refused.

Documentation in support of a visitor visa application should, therefore, be evidence of the applicant's intent to return home. Evidence of familial, occupational, financial, and other ties to his or her home country would be common evidence. Showing a return ticket for the flight is another common means.
